The Personal Data Protection Act (the General Data Protection Regulation, the Act on the Implementation of the General Data Protection Regulation, Official Gazette No. 42/18, and Official Gazette Nos. 103/03, 118/06, 41/08, 130/11, 106/12 – repealed) governs the protection of personal data relating to natural persons and the supervision of the collection, processing, and use of personal data in the Republic of Croatia. The purpose of personal data protection is to safeguard private life and other human rights and fundamental freedoms in the collection, processing, and use of personal data.
Personal data protection in the Republic of Croatia is ensured for every natural person regardless of nationality or residence and irrespective of race, skin colour, sex, language, religion, political or other beliefs, national or social origin, property, birth, education, social status, or other personal characteristics.
The Data Protection Officer ensures the lawfulness of personal data processing and the exercise of the right to personal data protection. The Officer supervises compliance with the provisions of the Personal Data Protection Act and other regulations governing the processing of personal data, alerts the controller of personal data filing systems to the necessity of applying personal data protection regulations in cases of planning and activities that may affect privacy and personal data protection, informs all persons involved in the processing of personal data about their statutory obligations for the purpose of protecting personal data, and cooperates with the Personal Data Protection Agency in connection with the supervision of personal data processing.
The Data Protection Officer is obliged to maintain the confidentiality of all information and data obtained in the performance of his duties, and this obligation shall continue even after the termination of the duties of the Data Protection Officer.
